MONDAINE launches the first essence solar watches
MONDAINE now takes their commitment to sustainability one step further and launches two essence solar watches. Iconic, minimalistic and powered by light, these new timepieces reaffirm MONDAINE’s dedication to continuously improve their sustainable sourcing with innovative solutions.
Innovation and sustainability, right on time
The two new essence watches feature a Swiss Ronda 215 solar movement offering reliable timekeeping powered entirely by light. They perfectly blend the iconic design of the Swiss Railways Clock with modern technologies and sustainable materials.
The signature dial and hands layout remain true to the original design of the clocks at ca 3000 SBB Swiss train stations since 1944 for which Mondaine has a worldwide exclusive license since 1986. The minimal clean black-and-white face ensures graphic impact and amazing readability.
The raw materials used to produce the watch case and strap of these sustainable Swiss Made watches predominantly originate from renewable sources, assembled using photovoltaic power from Mondaine’s factory roof. The essence watches are most likely one of the most sustainable watches worldwide.
The 41mm case is made from castor oil composite, an innovative material composition consisting of 40% castor oil sourced from the wonder tree, 30% glass fibre, 2% colour pigments and only 28% fossil oil for stability and longevity. The white strap is crafted from recycled PET textile, complemented by a natural cork lining that combines durability and comfort. The strap features a quick-release system for effortless changes and an extended product lifespan.
This conscious choice of sustainable materials and the new solar movement reflects MONDAINE’s ethos and commitment to sustainability. This is part of the company’s wider approach to consider future generations. MONDAINE watches are produced in the company’s own state-of-the-art Swiss factory with a photovoltaic solar system that covers up to 80% of the energy used. The remaining 20% is supplied by a local hydroelectric power plant. Mondaine as a Group, and all its products, have been comprehensively CO2 neutral for Scope 1,2,3 of the GHG protocol since 2020 through the removal of non-avoidable CO2 emissions, making it one of the world’s most sustainable watch-making companies.
Time, Powered by Light
Solar movements are powered by any light source, sunlight or artificial. The light that passes through the specially designed transparent dial reaches solar cells beneath, converting light into electrical energy. This energy is stored in a rechargeable battery that powers the Swiss Made movement. Just 2 minutes of light is enough to restart a fully discharged movement, running for a full day. Once fully charged, the watch will continue running for approximately 8 months, even in complete darkness. With no need for regular battery changes, the watch supports a more sustainable lifestyle – and your wallet - while maintaining impeccable Swiss precision.

The essence solar comes in two calm, modern colourways: a clean white case with an ivory strap or a minimalist black-on-black version.
